Sailing
Choate Sailing strives to balance competitive success with personal development and social cohesion. We are a small program, consistently fielding the most competitively experienced 12-14 sailors on campus as a varsity team. Wallingford is about a 25-minute drive from our practice venue in Branford, CT. We train in 420s and FJs, in salt water, and in the prevailing conditions of Long Island Sound. Conditions require wetsuits in the early spring.
The team competes in the spring season and travels throughout New England, with a core of excellent sailing programs to compete against right here in Connecticut. From Groton to Fairfield Country, CT has excellent sailing traditions and worldclass sailors. We are a member of the CT League of the New England School Sailing Association (NESSA) and we compete in the primary NESSA events in the spring season. Most sailors arrive to Choate with experience and are encouraged to also develop their skills and race experience both at school and in their summertime pursuits.
In season, the team practices on the water, schedules cardio and weight training, and engages in classroom work on strategy, tactics, and boat-handling skills. Emphasis is placed on athleticism, skills knowledge, and mental fortitude—one of the many lifelong lessons for sailors is perseverance in the face of adversity.
