Choate Recognized as Pioneer in AI Literacy, Safety and Ethics

Choate’s exploration and use of generative artificial intelligence has earned a badge of recognition as a “pioneer in AI Literacy, Safety and Ethics” from Middle States Association (MSA).

From April through July 2024, the School implemented a framework for AI in schools called RAIL (Responsible AI in Learning) from the Middle States Association. MSA’s endorsement demonstrates the School’s dedication to responsibly embracing this evolving technology while remaining aligned with core institutional values. Working together, faculty and staff produced evidence of practices, programs, infrastructure, governance, and culture and identity. The School’s Generative AI Portal provides information and tools, enabling all to continue learning and striding toward the future together.

MSA’s endorsement in responsible AI in learning (RAIL) evaluated the School’s efforts and conferred membership to the “founding fifty” pathfinders for other schools.

Head of Student and Academic Affairs Jennifer Karlen Elliott said, “I am proud of the collaborative efforts of our Choate community in exploring, clarifying, and defining how and where we can leverage the powerful resources and tools of Generative AI to pursue our mission in alignment with our values. We are motivated to continue to learn and iterate, and we are grateful for the important guardrails we have established to guide our process.”

To satisfy the requirements of endorsement, the School produced:

·      Evidence of AI literacy among its team

·      Training and material resources to its members

·      Student and employee handbook statements and policies on Gen AI

·      Organizational chart and role descriptions for AI “leads”

Website and Electronic Communications Manager Todd Jaser, who served as RAIL co-leader and Generative AI Collaborative Group Co-chair, says, “The MSA RAIL endorsement is a culmination of our dedicated staff and faculty's collaborative work with generative AI. The technology allows us to streamline our workflows while enhancing our creativity. This and future professional development bolsters our enduring support of the students' experiences."

The endorsement is valid for two years (Aug. 2024-2026).
